Review of Mobile Love Talk

In attending the Mobile Love talk this past week, I was surprisingly very disappointed in the content. For example, I was expecting to talk about Tinder and Snapchat, as mentioned in the program, but these topics were not mentioned at all.  In fact, the only thing the speaker talked about was the impact of apps such as Grindr and ManHunt on the gay community, which I don't have a problem with, but I just wish the content would've focused on Tinder and Snapchat more. So, to be quite frank I didn't learn much from this speech, but will write about the few things he did mention.

First, the speaker touched on the fact that sexting is very much considered an "evil force" in our world today. For example, people think "sexters" are getting STD's and becoming pregnant from sexting, odd but true.  Also, he briefly mentioned that by creating online profiles for dating websites, we are turning ourselves into objects to be purchased in a sense.  He also discussed the dangers in meeting people online due to the prevalence of users not being truthful about themselves in their profiles.

After this brief introduction, he dove into the sole focus of his hour long speech: the impact of these sites, specifically Grinder, on the gay community.

He started off by mentioning that Grindr is a site for gay males only to find partners or sex partners. The speaker was a gay male, and he told us how the gay community is much more likely to use these sites in order to find sexual partners "fast and easy." Going off of this, he said how gay males are much more free and open about their sexual experiences, which is why so many gay men turn to sites like Grindr to find sex partners more easily. Lastly, in looking at the picture above it's interesting to me how gay people look at sex more casually than heterosexual couples do.  Personally, I do not have any gay friends so this was new information to me.

Overall, although this speech was not anything that I expected, I did learn more about the gay community and their favorable use of these sites, such as Grindr. Since I really don't know much about this community, so I will now be able to understand their point of views when it comes to sex.
